While we know that 4-H and FFA provide significant agriculture education, what is being done to reach students from non-farming households.

Teacher Workshops/professional development provided by Kentucky Farm Bureau and Kentucky Agriculture and Environment in the Classroom.

Curriculum development and distribution that is aligned to Kentucky academic-standards

Mobile programs, agriculture days, and farm field trips

County Farm Bureaus, Conservation Districts, Extension Offices, and FFA Chapters visit schools with programming.

Via Andrea Sexten - Eastern Kentucky University hosted a week long high school teacher workshop in June at EKU and sent participants home with over $2,000 dollars worth of equipment for their classroom.

The Animal Science training workshop covered information and demonstrations in the following key areas:

    • Animal nutrition teaching activities
    • Genetic Analysis Case Study
    • Industry Networking with state commodity groups
    • Local industry tour – sites TBD
    • Poultry Fabrication
    • Ice Cream Making
      • Everyone will get an ice cream making ball to take home!
    • Animal parasitology and blood analysis

Our hope is to develop a collaborative relationship with the high school agriculture teachers and help provide resources for curriculum development.  Participants will get to keep and take home to their classrooms:

    • miniPCR thermocycler, gel electrophoresis, pipettes – a complete gene extraction kit for the classroom!
    • Animal product fabrication kit
    • Ice cream making ball
    • Microscope
    • Fecal and blood analysis kits
